The Herefordshire & Worcestershire 9U Boys and Girls County Team played in the County Cup competition on Saturday 15th May 2021 at Shrewsbury Tennis Centre. There were four teams represented in group E; Warwickshire, Staffordshire, Shropshire and Herefordshire & Worcestershire.

The event was split, by the LTA, from a mixed event into a boys and girls event with a change to timings on Thursday 13th May, two days before the event. On the day, the format was changed from Fast Four sets to a match tie-break. The weather throughout the day was generally wet with some short periods of sunshine. I would like to thank the players and parents for their understanding and flexibility regarding all the late changes.

The Boys

The team arrive in good time for everyone to complete their warm-up and have a knock-up. Looking around there are a lot of good, young players. We are looking forward to a great day (despite the weather) – team pictures taken, player nominations made, the referee holds his captains’ briefing and has a quick chat with the players, and we are underway.

Singles v Staffordshire:

The boys lead 4-0! A great start to the event with all players putting in a strong performance. Less pressure on the doubles later as the tie with Staffordshire is won.

Singles v Warwickshire:

Warwickshire lead the tie 3-1. This was a flattering score for Warwickshire! Ruben had a great match just losing out 10-8 and Daniel lost a close match 11-9 after having match points. Lucas did very well to win at No. 1 playing some of his best tennis. The Warwickshire were strong throughout but pressure now on the doubles.

Singles v Shropshire:

H&W lead 3-1. Lucas, Dara and Ruben play super matches but despite a winning diving backhand and having match points, Daniel couldn’t quite close out the match against Jude losing 11-9! Great performances from the boys and now onto the doubles.

Doubles Pairings:

Lucas and Dara, and Daniel and Ruben.

Doubles v Staffordshire:

We won both doubles, sealing the match 6-0. The boys played some very solid doubles including a massive ace down the T from Dara and in the other match Daniel doing a great job with his volleys (and another diving shot – was it the wet courts or does he think he is Boris Becker on grass?!).

Doubles v Warwickshire:

Needing to win both rubbers to keep the tie alive, the boys head on, feeling pretty good. The Warwickshire team put in very consistent performances and win 10-8 and 10-6. Warwickshire are worthy winners of the group.

Doubles v Shropshire:

Needing to win at least one doubles to beat Shropshire, the boys go on court ready to fight hard. Ruben plays some great forehand drives and he and Daniel win their doubles comfortably 10-1 and shortly after, Lucas and Dara come off winning 10-3. A great performance from the boys.

Summary:

Challenging conditions but great tennis and lots of smiles from all the boys the H&W 9U Boys team did an amazing job finishing second in group E!

The Girls

The team arrive on time after all the changes to the day. Everyone gets to knock up and prepare for the afternoon’s matches. Team pictures are taken, player nominations made, the referee holds his briefing (delayed by our girls who were sensibly going for comfort break before the start of the matches) the players listen to the referees talk and we get going.

Singles v Staffordshire:

The Staffordshire team is missing a player. Zoe, Ruby and Erica go on and all get past their nerves to win all their matches. Ava keeps practising to get herself for her first round. H&W girls 4-0 after the singles.

Singles v Warwickshire:

The Warwickshire team have some very good players. Ava came close losing out 10-8 in a great match but Warwickshire win all the rubbers.

Singles v Shropshire:

Zoe plays some great tennis with some hard-hitting and wins her match 10-8. Ruby and Erika lose their matches 10-7 to good opposition but Ava closes out her match 10-6 in another great performance to keep the tie close. The score sits at 2-2 against Shropshire – pressure on the doubles!

Doubles Pairings:

Zoe and Ruby

Erica and Ava

Doubles v Staffordshire:

Ruby and Zoe go on to play Khadijah and Sonya. The formation of both back and the strategy of attacking the net player off short balls works well and they win the match 10-7. Erica and Ava have a practice doubles against Ella and Maddie Walsh (Zoe’s sister) practicing their formations ready for their next match.

6-0 win to H&W.

Doubles v Warwickshire:

The Warwickshire girls are very consistent but our girls fight hard. Ruby and Zoe lose 10-6 and Erica and Ava lose 10-5.  It finishes 6-0 to another strong Warwickshire team who win the group.

Doubles v Shropshire:

At 2-2 in the tie both doubles are crucial! Ruby and Zoe lose 10-4 to Iris and Libby. So, Erica and Ava must win to keep us in the tie. With some great groundstrokes the girls win the match 10-6 and force a shootout.

Shootout pairing:

Zoe and Erica

Shootout – Zoe and Erica battle for the tie! After a nip and tuck match where the girls are always behind, they find themselves 9-8 down and facing match point! Sticking to the tactic of playing to the weaker opponent, the girls battle through to win 11-9 and beat Shropshire.

Summary:

The H&W 9U Girls team did fantastically to finish second in group E after a thriller shootout!

Overall Summary:

Great team spirit in the H&W teams as well as some brilliant tennis. Very pleased to get two second place finishes. Well done everyone! Thanks to Sam, my assistant, for his help throughout the day.
