Day 1 – 9th July
The first day was a fixture against Surrey, the order for the girls’ singles was slightly different to that of qualifying, due to increased rankings from our team. Leila played number 4, Leanna at 3, Grace at 2 and Kiah staying at number 1. Leila started us off and unfortunately was no match for the Surrey number 4, losing in straight sets. Leanna, Grace and Kiah also had tough matches, also losing in straight sets, which showed the level of play the girls needed to compete against for the weekend. The girls then played the doubles, with Leanna and Leila playing at 2nd pair. The match was a masterclass from Surrey and H&W suffered a similar fate to that of the singles matches. Kiah and Grace played at 1st pair, with some excellent doubles, however the consistency from Surrey was excellent and it was not to be for us. A tough rest of 6-0 to Surrey, but some good points to take into day 2.
Day 2 – 10th July
Day two started with a match against Hertfordshire, with the girls in the same order Leila started us off and had a fantastic match going all the way to a match tiebreak but she narrowly lost 10-6. The other girls put in some great effort against their opponents, but it wasn’t to be and they lost in straight sets. The doubles again were played in the same order and some great teamwork from H&W but again the opponents proved too strong and resulted in a 6-0 loss against Hertfordshire. The 2nd match of the day was against Lancashire, another strong team, currently 2nd in the table. The girls started strong, determined to get some points on the board. Leila had a great come back after losing the first set 4-0 and then taking the opponent to a 2nd set tiebreak but she narrowly lost. Leanna played some fantastic tennis at 3 and took her opponent all the way to a 3rd set match tiebreak, giving it her all, but lost 10-5. Grace and Kiah also played some good tennis, but the Lancashire girls showed why they were ranked so high, beating them in straight sets. 4-0 down after a long day of tennis!
Day 3 – 11th July
The final day of the event and the girls had the doubles against Lancashire to get them pumped ready for the 7th/8th playoff. Leila and Leanna played some great points but were overcome by the 2nd pair. Kiah and Grace put up a great fight at 1st pair but narrowly lost 4-3, 4-2. Our final match was against Warwickshire. Again, Leila fought well but despite having 3 match point lost in an epic 3rd set match tiebreak 11-9. Leanna struggled to get stuck in with her match and unfortunately lost in straight sets. Kiah and Grace competed well but also struggled to pull through losing their matches also. The doubles were played with strong spirit and great teamwork but again the girls struggled to find the much deserved win.
Overall a fantastic experience for a young team and a big event. Lots to take away ready for future years and hopefully inspiring their development on their tennis journey. A great big thank you for the support from all the parents and Katy!
